Though the Zaku II was originally designed for space combat, Zeon's engineers were able to adapt it for use on Earth, in the process eliminating all space-specific hardware. The Zaku II has proven to be a formidable weapon on land as well as in space, but frontline troops still find it necessary to further modify it for their particular situation. For example, the version used by Zeon's Southeast Asian forces has a set of spikes on its right shoulder shield to enhance its melee combat abilities.
